Fun Fact!

The Temple of Iris slot is undoubtedly based on a temple that was dedicated to the Egyptian Goddess Isis, built by the Romans in Pompei. Archaeologists found the Temple of Isis during one of the first excavations of Pompeii, in 1764. Remarkably, the temple was almost completely intact when it was found.

Though initially built in Pompeii, the Temple of Isis is no longer located there. Instead, it is now located on a nearby island Agilka. The Temple of Isis was moved after it was almost submerged forever when the Aswan dam was constructed in 1960-1970. When the area was flooded, the Egyptian government and UNESCO were able to work together to pump the area dry and move all 50,000 stones, individually, to its new home.

The building of the Temple of Isis is believed to have been started by the mysterious ancient Cult of the Egyptian Cult. This cult spread through the Mediterranean from the 3rd century BC. The cult believed in the mythical story of the Isis, whose spouse Osiris was killed and dismembered by Seth. The story says that Isis collecting the parts of Osiris's body and recomposed and revived him with her magical limbs, becoming the life-giving deity. Many of the cult members were from the lower classes of Pompeii, as they liked the message of hope for a life beyond death.

The Temple of Isis was built using classical Egyptian style. The building of the temple began in 280 BCE and was one of the last places where Isis was worshipped. Ptolemy II Philadelphus, and his successor, Ptolemy III Euergetes, are responsible for completing the structures of the temple of Isis. The Roman emperor Hadrian chose to add a gate to the west of the complex. Over time, some other small temples and shrines were added to the Temple of Isis dedicated to Egyptian deities, including Imhotep, Hathor, Osiris, Horus, and Nephthys.

The Temple of Isis is a small temple on a high basis at the centre of a portico style courtyard. In front of the Temple of Isis are three structures. These structures include an altar, a pit for offerings to be discharged, and a small building called a purgatorium. Inside the purgatorium is a staircase that leads visitors to the basin, where followers would draw water for the offerings. The water is said to come directly from the Nile. Behind the temple, there is a large hall that is believed to be used for the initiates' meetings. In a smaller temple, some paintings depicted various images from the myth of the goddess. Some of the displayed images include Isis bringing Osiris back to life, giving birth to Horus, and Osiris being mummified after his death.

All of the furnishings and statues retrieved from the Temple of Isis's site are currently on display in the National Archeological Museum of Naples. In 1918, the British Consul Henry Salt and his assistant Giovanni Belzoni removed the obelisks in front of the temple. The obelisks can now be found in a garden in Dorset, England.
